Two celebrated Chinese restaurants in Oakland have permanently closed

After four decades of serving hefty portions of fluffy fried rice, crispy orange chicken and savory wonton soup, Little Shin Shin has permanently closed, as first reported by Berkeleyside.

The Oakland mainstay, located at 4258 Piedmont Ave., quietly closed its doors on May 10, announcing the closure on its storefront with a goodbye note. The business owners’ decision to close came as they sought retirement, the note shared.

“Thank you for the past two decades,” the note read. “Little Shin Shin will be closing [its] doors permanently on…May 10th, 2022. We are thankful to have served our loyal customers for the past two decades. Our owners are retiring and will miss serving the Piedmont community. Thank you once again for your support and memories throughout the years! We will truly miss you all.”

While the note indicated that Little Shin Shin had operated for two decades, it had actually been in business for twice as long. In 2013, it was featured on an episode of KQED’s “Check, Please! Bay Area,” where then-manager Dennis Huang shared that he had spent the last 24 years working at the restaurant; at the time, it had been open for 31 years. That means that Little Shin Shin opened around 1982.

Little Shin Shin’s menu combined Hunan, Sichuan, Mandarin, and Cantonese-style dishes and was best known for its hot-and-sour soup, Peking duck, and plenty of other items that were large enough to share with groups. The restaurant regularly hosted multigenerational families looking for traditional dishes in a casual, no-fuss space.

Throughout Little Shin Shin’s four-decade tenure, the restaurant racked up numerous accolades that included at least three “Best of Oakland” awards in 2006, 2010, and 2012.

The end of Little Shin Shin follows the closure of another decades-old Chinese restaurant in Oakland. Berkeleyside reports that Great Wall Chinese Restaurant, located at 6247 College Ave., closed its doors last month after 33 years in business. The restaurant opened in 1989.

Like their counterparts at Little Shin Shin, the owners of Great Wall Chinese Restaurant also posted a goodbye note to inform customers of the closure. It read, in part, “My wife and [I] have decided to start a new journey, and have sold the establishment to a new owner.”

It’s unclear if Great Wall Chinese Restaurant will continue operating under the same name at this time. SFGATE reached out to the Oakland business for comment, but could not connect as the number has since been changed.
